Lettice

Stone Number: CT 164

Lettice was a young child who was enslaved in Wallingford by Caleb and Ruth Atwater. In 1774, the Atwaters built their new home, Atwater Homestead, where they raised their family. Living in the household alongside them, at least for a time, was a little girl named Lettice. There are only two records available to document Lettice’s presence in the household: the first is a baptism record and the second a burial record just a few months later. These words were handwritten under “Burials” in Wallingford Congregational Church Records: “June 3, 1784 Lettice, a negro Servant of C. Atwater, age 6.”.
