According to the document, he planned to bequeath Molly to his daughter Elizabeth. Devastatingly, the will stipulated that if Molly were to have children, her first daughter would be taken, at the age of one, and transferred to Jean’s son, Jacob. Such heart wrenching examples of family separation were not uncommon amid enslavement.
