Cloe Prut

Stone Number: CT 242

Cloe Prut was born in 1738 in Hadley, MA, the youngest child of Arthur and Joan Prut. The Prut family was enslaved by Rev. Isaac Chauncey, the Congregational minister in Hadley. When Chauncey died, members of the Prut family were distributed to his children. Cloe was “given” to Rev. Chauncey’s daughter, Katherine, who later married Rev. Daniel Russell and moved to Rocky Hill. They had no children, and Katherine Russell left much of her estate to Cloe, giving her “books she calls her own” and items to help her make a living. She also gave Cloe her freedom. After Mrs. Russell’s death, Cloe can be seen purchasing a house with another formerly enslaved woman, Hagar Dora (formerly enslaved by Silas Deane). They can be seen purchasing items in a local account book. Although they owned the house, a man who lived with them, Pomp Dorus, was listed as the Head of Household in early census records. Cloe died in 1818 at age 70.
