Pegg and Tobijah and their children were enslaved in Mansfield by Shubael Conant, a town leader and judge who served in the General Assembly. In church records, under the Conant surname, the following entry appears: “Titus, child of Tobijah and Pegg, colored servants of Shubael Conant b. [or born] February 17, 1743.” Under “Baptisms,” there is a Nov. 9, 1745 listing for “Tobijah (negro), servant of Shubael Conant, Esq.” and a Nov. 30, 1745 entry for “Titus and Kate, Daughters of Tobijah (negro).” (The identification of Titus as Tobijah’s daughter is almost certainly a mistake, since three decades later there is a listing for “1 Negro man Titus” in Shubael Conants 1776 estate inventory.) On May 5, 1751, a girl named “Fanny, Tobijah and Pegg (servants of S. Conant)” is listed.
