Timothy and Chloe Anthony were an enslaved couple who lived with their growing family at the Thomas and Abigail Darling homestead in Woodbridge, now the site of the Amity and Woodbridge Historical Society. Presumably present when the Darling family moved from New Haven to their new home around 1774, Timothy and Chloe Anthony would have been accompanied by at least three children, a number which would grow to eight over the years. They would have been present —and contributed their labor—as the Darling property evolved. At the same time, they would have looked on as Connecticut and its fellow colonies began agitating for freedom from British rule even as they and so many Connecticut residents like them lacked liberty themselves. Perhaps inspired by that spirit, in 1777, Chloe and Timothy were freed, alongside their infant son, also named Timothy. That action by their enslaver, Thomas Darling, ensured that their subsequent children—Titus, Philemon, and Abraham—would be born free. Their older children, however, Hila, Gad, Lettuce, and Luke, would have to wait.
