Decades later, Jonathan Sayward’s diary documents the lives of Prince. Prince, described in the records as “bright and active,” married Dinah in 1780. Dinah was enslaved at the nearby Robert Rose Tavern but spent time in this household. Prince gained his freedom through military service during the American Revolution and returned to York as a free man.
