Peter

Stone Number: CT 186

Peter, a “child servant” of Nathan Jewett (1710-1761), passed by will in 1761 to Jewett’s daughter Mary Jewett (1743-1825) “to be dispos’d of during his natural life.” Listed in Jewett’s estate inventory with four other enslaved persons, Peter was appraised at 8 pounds. He was likely the younger brother of the “Negro Boy named Pomp” appraised at 30 pounds and the son of either the “Negro Man Ceaser” or the “Negro man Nero,” both appraised in the inventory at 58 pounds.

Peter’s later life has not been traced. Whether Mary Jewett “dispos’d of” him in Lyme before moving to Newbury, MA, in 1762 after marrying Paul Moody (1742-1822) has not been determined.
