Titus Kent was a Black Patriot from Suffield who served in the American Revolution from 1775-1783. A member of the 3rd Connecticut Regiment, he served under Col. Samuel Wyllys and Gen. Samuel Holden Parsons. Until 1772, he was enslaved by Samuel Kent. After Samuel Kent’s death, he became the property of Elihu Kent. While his name is commemorated on Suffield’s Veterans Memorial with many other Patriots who fought for this country’s freedom, it is not clear that ever enjoyed freedom himself. According to pension testimony shared by Hannah Austin, a descendant of his enslaver’s wife, he remained enslaved by members of the Kent family, who were seeking compensation in the form of a pension on the theory that he was their property when he enlisted.
