Peter was enslaved in Longmeadow, Massachusetts by Captain George Colton. He was baptized into the First Church on July 13, 1735 and on May 22, 1744 was married to Phillis, who was enslaved by the town’s minister, Rev. Stephen Williams. Peter was likely sent to support the household of Captain Colton’s daughter when she married Sergeant David Burt in town. Along with a man named Caesar, Captain George Colton bequeathed Peter to his wife and son, Timothy, upon his death.  Peter outlived Captain Colton by fourteen years. He died on September 9, 1774, less than four months after Phillis died at the Williams’ parsonage. On the occasion of Peter’s passing, Rev. Williams wrote, “this morning Sgt. David Burt came in – told me Peter Negro died last night very suddenly, and almost alone.”
