Billy

Stone Number: NY 10

Billy was an enslaved elder listed as “not fit for work” in the Adolph Philipse’s 1750 Probate Inventory, likely due to age, injury, or impairment. Though of less economic value to his enslaver, elders like Billy were valued and respected within the enslaved community at Phillipsburg Manor, as they were in much of West Africa, where elders were esteemed as teachers and culture keepers.
