Nicholas, a child, was the first person known to have been enslaved by Reverend Stephen Williams in Longmeadow, MA. Nicholas was first mentioned in Rev. Williams’ diary in 1718 when Williams was twenty-three years old and in the first year of his ministry. It is unclear where Nicholas came from, who his parents were, or how he came to be separated from them. Though it is impossible to know exactly how old Nicholas was at the time, Williams’ language indicates he was young by referring to him as “my Lad that I have bought,” and  “my little boy.” During the year that Nicholas was in Longmeadow, Reverend Williams got married to Abigail Davenport of Connecticut. This marriage could be part of what prompted Williams to sell Nicholas. Nicholas caused problems for Reverend Williams who seemed overwhelmed with his responsibilities as a new pastor and a new husband. Williams wrote several times in his diary of Nicholas’ poor health and his distrust of the boy who was deeply unhappy. Nicholas was sold away, perhaps to someone in Deerfield, in October 1718 and disappeared from public record.
