Enslaved by different families for much of their lives, Toby Bardo and his wife, Jude, left their marks on Westbrook. Toby Hill, a meandering country road, still carries the name of the man named Toby, who was enslaved in the neighborhood and continued to live there after gaining his freedom in 1782. Historical accounts describe Toby and Jude as a “worthy couple” who were “permitted to sit on the broad stairs to the gallery and listen to the sermons” at the Congregational Church. Despite being enslaved by different families and living in separate households for much of their adult lives, Toby and Jude raised a family, including a son named Eliakim and a daughter named Cloe, and we can see the contributions of their descendants today.
