Caesar

Stone Number: MA 13

Enslaved by Ebenezer Wells, Caesar was baptized in 1735 and later admitted to membership in the Deerfield Church. In May 1748, Wells paid Dr. Thomas Williams 4 shillings to “Extract 1 tooth for Cesar.” Caesar had an account at Elijah Williams’s store in Deerfield where he purchased small items such as a knife, and shoe buckles. During one exchange he sold Elijah Williams a fox pelt to pay for his purchases. Caesar lived in the same household as Lucy Terry, who became free when she married AbijahPrince in 1756. Caesar may no longer have been in the Wells household by then, as he does not appear in extant records at that time, nor was he named in Ebenezer’s will or probate inventory in 1758.
