Enslaved by Thomas Dickinson, Ishmael’s name appears in the account book for Elijah Williams’s Deerfield store, where he is described as “Mr. Thomas Dickinson’s Negro.” Among his purchases were stockings, rum, garters, and a silk handkerchief. He paid his debt by digging a grave, working for a day, and providing pine for building a scow (boat).
