Ishmael was enslaved by Samuel Hinsdale. Records show Dr. Thomas Williams charging Hinsdale “to Phleb. Yr Servt Negroe”, referring to a bloodletting procedure. (Bloodletting was a common treatment for numerous ailments.) In 1750, Hinsdale had shoes made for Ishmael, and a year later Ishmael purchased buttons at Elijah Williams’ Deerfield store.
