Enslaved by Ensign Timothy Childs of Deerfield, “Umphrey Negr Ser to Ens. Childs” died on October 16, 1767, according to an entry in the diary of the Reverend Roger Newton of Greenfield, MA. Church records show that he was baptized on December 5, 1762. Records from Dr. Thomas Williams show that he treated Humphry for several injuries.
