Enslaved by Justice Jonathan Wells, Pompey was the husband of Rebecca, who may have been enslaved next door by Justice Wells’ daughter, Mary. In 1735, church records show that “Pompey Servant to Justice Jonathan Wells assented to the articles of ye Christian faith Entered into Covenant and was Baptized.” In August 1736, another church record shows that “Pompey Negro and Rebecca his wife” were admitted to membership in the church. Five years later, a child named Caesar, was baptized. He was described as the “servant to Wid. Mary Wells,” the daughter of Justice Jonathan Wells.
